Remembering Whitney Houston

When I heard on the news last night of Whitney Houston’s sudden passing, I was shocked and saddened.  I started enjoying listening to Whitney Houston’s music in elementary school when her hit song “Greatest Love of All” was frequently played on the radio.  It was often played in summer camp when I was around ten.   (They may have been playing this song for the camp counselors to hear since it’s about the love of kids, and I guess it was quite fitting.)
Two of my favorite Whitney songs of all times are “When You Believe” (for the Disney movie Prince of Egypt about Moses) and “One Moment in Time”.  (I’ve embedded the videos on this page.)

In this time of fear…… Now I’m standing here, my heart so full I can’t explain.  Speaking faith and speaking words I never thought I’ll say.  There can be miracles, when you believe.  Though hope is frail, it’s hard to kill.  Who knows what miracles you can achieve?  When you believe, somehow you will… you will when you believe.

Each day I live, I want it to be, a day to give, the best of me.  I rise and fall.  Yet through it all…  I want one moment in time… when I’m faced with destiny…  I will be free.
I must admit that not all of Whitney Houston’s songs have good messages, in my opinion.  I didn’t particularly like the messages on some of her love songs, but she surely did make all her songs sound great with her amazing vocal range.
Also, who can forget the hit movie The Body Guard she starred in back in the early 90’s and the hit song “I Will Always Love You” which was voted the best song in my high school year book.
Not only did Ms. Houston have great vocal abilities, but she actually started a career in the spotlight as a teen model, which did not surprise me when I read about this years ago.  She was a very beautiful woman.
People started recognizing her singing talent when her mother brought her to sing at church events, and the producer Clyde Davis introduced her to the world when he discovered her.
Unfortunately, in the last ten years, Whitney Houston has been struggling with personal problems (battling with drugs, alcohol, and ex-husband Bobby Brown.)  I've always hoped that she would pull herself back up.  Despite her struggles in her later years, we can’t forget her accomplishments of more than two decades.  My prayers go out to Whitney Houston and her family.
